Urs Fair

Dargah sharif, AjmerUrs Fair is a commemorative celebration. The Urs at Ajmer marks the memory of Khwaja Moinnudin Chisti, a Sufi saint held in the highest esteem by followers of all religions. He was popularly called Gareeb Nawaz, as he was a benefactor of the poor and the people facing difficult times. People throng the Dargah throughout the year to seek the blessings of the saint and for thanksgiving once their wishes are fulfilled.

Believers bring votive offerings as a mark of their devotion. Qawwalis and Mehfils (poetry reading sessions) are a major part of the celebrations. Qawwalis are devotional songs, sung in the praise of the saint. These singing and poetry sessions attract the devotees and tourists alike in large numbers.

The specialty of Ajmer is its secular temperament. The Urs is attended by people of all faiths from all over the world even though Ajmer is a major Islamic pilgrimage centre. There are several rituals associated with the Urs. Participating in these rituals is an uplifting experience for all visitors to the city. The Hindu holy town of Pushkar known for the Pushkar Fair also lies nearby, a mere 15 minutes ride away.

Ajmer is well equipped to meet the requirements of luxury tourists. There are several bazaars selling traditional Rajasthani textiles and crafts. Also try traditional Rajasthani meals while you are here.

How to reach:

Ajmer is accessible from Jaipur (132 km) and Jodhpur (198 km) by rail, bus and air.
