Amer Fort Jaipur

Amer Fort JaipurThe pride of Kachwaha Rajputs, Amer or Amber as it is sometimes called, is a majestic and historic fort on top of a hill. Though accessible by car, an elephant ride in true royal style to the fort is a lot of fun and popular way of reaching the fort.

The 16th century fort has a profusion of palaces and courtyards. Amer was the capital of the Kachwaha clan, before the modern Jaipur city was built. From its place of pride, the fort overlooks Jaipur city. In the foreground of the palace is a serene lake that reflects the fort in all its splendour.

The fort complex has medieval citadels, a stunning complex of gardens, temples, pavilions and courtyards that are all well preserved. There is even a maze here. The various buildings in Amer Fort were used as a pleasure palace, for running the administration of the state and also as military stronghold.

The fort is made of red sandstone and white marble. The first building to be seen is the Diwan-e-Aam or the Hall of Public Audience, followed by the intricately painted double-storied Ganesh Pol gate. Sukh Niwas and Jas Mandir (a lovely temple with delicate mirror work, stucco, paint and carving) are remarkable. The piece de resistance is Sheesh Mahal or the Mirror Palace. Patterned mosaic, coloured glass and mirrors decorate the Sheesh Mahal from floor to ceiling.

Amer Fort is definitely not a sight to be missed while traveling to Jaipur.
