City Palace Jaipur

City Palace JaipurStrategically located in Jaipur the Pink City, the City Palace is one of its most recognized landmarks and also its major attraction. Built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, members of the royal family still occupy parts of this palace. It is a vast complex with numerous smaller palaces, courtyards and temples and occupies seventh part of the area of entire Jaipur city. The blend of traditional Rajasthani and Mughal architecture and its courtyards and blooming gardens make it a sight worth visiting.

Chandra Mahal or the Moon Palace, Mubarak Mahal or the Palace of Good Fortune, Mukut Mahal or the Crown Palace, Maharani's Palace, Shri Govind Dev Temple and the City Palace Museum are some of the major attractions inside the complex. Mubarak Mahal is the first one to be seen, immediately upon entering the first square. Mubarak Mahal was built by Sawai Madho Singh in the 19th century to entertain his guests. Today, it has been converted into a costume gallery, to display the royal attires.

Diwan-I-Khas, a hall meant for private audience lies next. Two sterling silver vessels on display here that are acclaimed to be the world's largest silver vessels grab attention. Made for Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II to carry water from River Ganga to drink on his trip to England, now these vessels beguile everyone visiting Jaipur. Diwan-I-Aam, meant for public audience when the city was ruled by royals, is the other attraction of this courtyard. In modern times, it is an art gallery showcasing painted ceilings and rare ancient handwritten original manuscripts of Hindu scriptures.

Maharani's Palace, meant for the queens to live in, has been converted into a museum, and displays weapons from 15th century onwards. Chandra Mahal is the most beautiful part of City Palace. It is seven storied and each is known by a different name. The topmost storey is known as Mukut Mahal. Delicate paintings, walls with mirror work and floral decorations, make Chandra Mahal a not to be missed attraction. Currently, Chandra Mahal is the residence of ex-ruler.

Badal Mahal or the Cloud Palace stands opposite Chandra Mahal and on its way is the Govind Dev Ji Temple. There is also a multi cuisine restaurant in the Palace offering a place to enjoy a break with local delicacies. City Palace is a fine example of Jaipur’s royal heritage and is a symbol of magnificence.
