City Palace Udaipur

City palace UdaipurThe City Palace in Udaipur is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. It stands on a crest overlooking the Pichola Lake. It is a majestic white palace located in the heart of Udaipur. City Palace was originally built by Maharana Udai Singh of the Sisodia Rajput clan in 1559 AD and was extended by several subsequent Maharanas. The design and architecture appears harmonious, in spite of having been built over generations. The City Palace is made of granite and marble and is surrounded by crenellated walls.

Unlike other major monuments of Rajasthan that all have Rajput and Mughal influences, the City Palace has Rajput and Chinese influence. There are well planned fountains and gardens adding to the charm of the City Palace. There are three main gateways namely, Hati Pol or the Elephant Gate, Bada Pol or the Big Gate and the Tripolia Gate. At the Tripolia Gate, the kings weighed themselves in gold and silver that was later distributed amongst the common people. This was a popular customs of those days.

The Jagdish Temple dating from 1651A.D, dedicated to Lord Vishnu is situated in the complex. So is a large courtyard that was used to stage elephant fights in those days. Suraj Gokhada, the Balcony of the Sun, was the place where the Suryavansi Maharanas of Mewar presented themselves to their subjects in time of trouble to restore their confidence. The "Mor Chowk' is known for its exquisite peacock mosaics in glass. The Chini Chitrashala, is so called for its blue and white Chinese and Dutch ornamental tiles with the latter showing Biblical scenes including the flight to Egypt.

The Moti Mahal or Pearl Palace is a big attraction for the beauty of its decor and also the Sheesh Mahal for its exquisite mirror-work mosaics. The Amar Vilas has a beautiful hanging garden with fountains, towers and terraces. It also has an unmatched view of the Lake Pichola and the city of Udaipur itself.

Bhim Vilas Palace is adorned with beautiful paintings of Radha and Krishna. The Zenana Mahal has beautiful frescoes besides wall. Dilkhush Mahal also has pretty interiors.

One section of the City Palace is now a museum that offers a glimpse into the long and chequered history of the city.

With so much to explore, the City Palace is not just a worthwhile excursion but the major attraction of Udaipur that must not be missed at any cost.
